A state-of-the-art mine in Goderich, Ontario, is the entrance to what was once a vast, tropical sea that lay in the middle of North America, over four hundred million years ago during the Silurian period. As the continent shifted away from the equator the sea disappeared but the salty deposits on its bottom remained. More than five hundred metres underground, towering salt pillars gleam inside the mine’s walls. Like a coded message, the white layers record periods of extreme heat and dark, cooler, wet weather. It’s a fascinating record of seasonal patterns that spans several hundred years. The same deposit is found deep below the city of Detroit, Michigan. Today, that ancient salt is hauled to the surface and shipped all around the Great Lakes region.FACTS:The Sifto salt mine in Goderich, Ontario is the largest in the world. It extends five kilometres under Lake Huron.A team that was originally drilling for oil in the area first struck rock salt in 1866. The rock salt, discovered more than 300 metres feet beneath Goderich Harbour, was the first recorded discovery of a salt bed in North America.

Developed in 1959, the Sifto Salt mine shaft, surface mill and loading facilities are attractively situated on the site shown above. Offering access to transportation by road, rail and water, the plant site was built-up, largely from fill, in Goderich harbor. Sifto's first mine shaft is circular, measures 4.88 m (16 feet) across and is completely concrete lined; it extends from the surface down to the bottom of the salt beds a distance of 549 m (1,800 feet); a second shaft, also 4.88 m (16 feet) in diameter, is located 61 m (200 feet) away. The first shaft is used for hoisting salt to the surface, the second shaft is for ventilation, personnel and equipment.In 1981 construction started on an expansion program to increase capacity from 2,000,000 t (2,250,000 tons) to 3,150,000 t (3,500,000 tons) annually. The objective could not have been achieved without sinking a third shaft and increasing significantly the quantity of ventilating air introduced into the mine. Like No. 2, this shaft is also circular and concrete-lined but is 6.7 m (22 feet) in diameter. The reason for the increase in size is to make the cross-sectional area approximately equal to the combined total of the other two shafts, thus keeping the velocity of the ventilating air flow within tolerable limits.The mine extends 14 kilometers under Lake Huron and employs over 500 workersThe largest salt mine in the world is located at Goderich Ontario Canada which is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. The Terex 33-19 "Titan" was a prototype off-highway, ultra class, rigid frame, three-axle, diesel/AC electric powertrain haul truck designed by the Terex Division of General Motors and assembled at General Motors Diesel Division's London, ON,Canada assembly plant in 1973. Only one 33-19 was ever produced and it was the largest, highest capacity haul truck in the world for 25 years. After 13 years in service, the 33-19 was restored and is now preserved on static display as a tourist attraction in Sparwood, BC, Canada.

Development
General Motors developed the 33-19 "Titan" in response to open pit mine operators need for more efficient haul trucks. GM believed that a general decrease in mineral ore quality combined with an projected need to mine oil shale and tar sandswould increase the quantity of ore hauled by mine operators world wide.^[1] The 33-19 "Titan" was the largest in the Terex 33 series of off-road haul trucks, which also included the 33-03, 33-05, 33-07, 33-09, 33-11 and the 33-15. The 33-19 "Titan" and the 33-15 both used diesel/AC electric powertrains, while the other, smaller members of the 33 series of haul trucks used mechanical powertrains.

China’s first large-size mining dumper (400t) successfully rolled off the production line in Xiangtan Jiuhua Industrial Park in Hunan Province on August 22, 2011. This device was independently developed and manufactured by CERI (Xiangtan) Heavy Industrial Equipment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Capital Engineering & Research Incorporation Limited (CERI). Distinguished guests and officials present at the celebrating ceremony included: Vice Chairman Chen Zongxing of the CPPCC National Committee; Chen Zhaoxiong, Standing Member of CPC Hunan Provincial Committee; Vice Chairman Gong Jianming of the CPPCC Hunan Provincial Committee; Mr. Simon HUO, FMG’s Chief Representative in China; and Chairman Shi She of CERI. All the guests simultaneously pressed the start-up ball at the celebrating site, and then the mysterious mask of the giant dumper was unveiled, which greatly impressed all the people present at the event. Basing upon the technical preparation over the past years, CERI (Xiangtan) Heavy Industrial Equipment Co., Ltd. independently researched and developed the HMTK-6000 mining dumper (400t), which was the very first set in China. And this is one of the major achievements made by CERI during its product mix adjustment and transformation of strategic targets in accordance with the Restructuring and Revitalization Planning for Equipment Manufacturing Industry promulgated by the State Council.

The dumper is 16.02m in length, 9.65m in width and 7.55m in height, with a tyre diameter of 4.03m, a designed full-load capacity of 360 tons (equivalent to the standard total weight of six railway carriages), and the maximum speed of 64km/h. The device is featured by large volume, high loading capacity and small deadweight. The dumper can be widely used in the fields of exploitation of strip mines (such as coal, steel, copper, gold and oil sand) and transportation of soil-rocks, which can play an active role in enhancing the mining productivity and reducing the transportation costs for enterprises in strip mines.The other attendees at the ceremony included: Secretary of CPC Xiangtan Municipal Committee; Mayor of Xiangtan Municipal Government; officials from Department of Equipment Industry of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Equipment Research institute of the General Reserve Department of PLA, Hunan Provincial Publicity Dept., SASAC (State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission) Hunan Provincial Committee, Hunan Provincial Economy and Informatization Committee, Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce, Hunan Provincial Department of Scientific Technology, Hunan Hualing Group and the leaders of the other scientific research institutes and heavy industrial enterprises. Description

It is 160 feet (49 m) high and weighs 11 million pounds. The bucket holds 90 cubic yards (69 m³) or 150 tons. Maximum speed is 0.22 MPH. It cost $6.5 million in 1962.

Big Brutus, while not the largest electric shovel ever built, is the largest electric shovel still in existence. The Captain, at 28 million pounds, was the largest shovel and one of the two largest land-based mobile machines ever built. It was scrapped in 1992.^[1]

The Captain was a unique machine in many ways. Besides being the largest mobil land machine ever built ( at that time)28 million pounds..., and having the largest dipper capacity (180 CY), Many other features made this Marion shovel stand out. Features like being designed to strip two seams of coal simultaneously, or having enough clearance below it to allow loaders and haul truck to pass under it in safety (while it was operating.), or having two trailing cable reels, mounted on opposite sides of the machine... so it wouldn't have to turn around when it reached the end of the pit, and a host of others.

The Captain began it's working life in 1965 for Southwestern Illinois Coal Corp. at it's "Captain Mine" (hence the name) where itwas given the unique job of stripping two seams of coal simultaneously. The upper seam was about 50 feet above the lower one, And a machine was needed that could handle the job. Marion engineers went to work on the problem, and the captain was the result. As all shovels do, it walked directly upon the coal and stripped the seam in front of it, but this machine also stripped the upper seam at it's side ( the upper seam was nearly level with the operators cab). After making a pass, and the coal had been removed from both seams, the captain moved over and stripped the bench left from the upper seam down to the level of it's tracks. As the machine progressed, the overburden was placed in the pit left by the previous pass.

This view clearly shows the upper seam of coal being stripped along side the captain, as well as the seam it's walking on.

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, BHP Co. Ltd., BHP, also known as "the Big Australian",^[5]was incorporated in 1885, operating the silver and lead mine at Broken Hill in western New South Wales, Australia.^[6]^[7] The Broken Hill group floated on 10 August 1885.^[8] The first consignment of Broken Hill ore (48 tons, 5 cwt, 3grs) was smelted at the Intercolonial Smelting and Refining Company's works at Spotswood, Melbourne.^[8]

The resulting 35,605 ounces of silver raised a lot of interest when exhibited at the City of Melbourne Bank in Collins St. Some sceptics asserted the promoters were merely using silver from somewhere else, to ramp up the shares...Another shareholder, the dominating W.R. Wilson had had to lend [William Jamieson, General Manager] a new suit so he could take the first prospectus, printed at Silverton near Broken Hill on 20 June 1885, to Adelaide to start the float process.^[8]

In 1915, the company ventured into steel manufacturing, with its operations based primarily in Newcastle, New South Wales. The decision to move from mining ore at Broken Hill to open a steelworks at Newcastle was due to the technical limitations in recovering value from mining the 'lower-lying sulphide ores'.^[9] The discovery of Iron Knob and Iron Monarch near the western shore of the Spencer Gulf in South Australia combined with the development by the BHP metallurgist A. D. Carmichael of a technique for 'separating zinc sulphides from the accompanying earth and rock' led BHP 'to implement the startlingly simple and cheap process for liberating vast amounts of valuable metals out of sulphide ores, including huge heaps of tailings and slimes up to 40 ft high'.^[10]

The company began petroleum exploration in the 1960s with discoveries in Bass Strait, an activity which became an increasing focus.^[11]

BHP began to diversify offshore in a variety of projects. One project was the Ok Tedi copper mine in Papua New Guinea, where the company was successfully sued by the indigenous inhabitants because of the environmental degradation caused by the mine operations.^[12] BHP had better success with the giant Escondida copper mine in Chile (57.5% owned) and theEkati Diamond Mine in northern Canada.^[13]

The inefficiencies of what was, by global standards, a small steel operation in Newcastle finally caught up with the company and the Newcastle operations were closed in 1999.^[14] The 'long products' side of the steel business was spun off to form OneSteel in 2000.^[15]

In 2001, BHP merged with the Billiton mining company to form BHP Billiton, the largest mining company in the world. In 2002, the 'flat products' steel business was spun off to form BHP Steel. In 2003, BHP Steel changed its name to BlueScope Steel.^[16]

Billiton was a mining company whose origins stretch back to 29 September 1860, when the articles of association were approved by a meeting of shareholders in the Groot Keizerhofhotel in The Hague, the Netherlands.^[17]

Two months later, the company acquired the mineral rights to the tin-rich islands of Banka (Bangka) and Billiton (Belitung) in the Indonesian archipelago, off the eastern coast ofSumatra.^[17]

Billiton's initial business forays included tin and lead smelting in the Netherlands, followed in the 1940s by bauxite mining in Indonesia and Suriname. In 1970, Shell acquired Billiton and accelerated the scope of progress of this growth.^[17] The tin and lead smelter in Arnhem, the Netherlands, was shut down in the 1990s.

In 1994, South Africa's Gencor Ltd. acquired the mining division of Billiton excluding the downstream metal division.^[18] Billiton was divested from Gencor in 1997.^[19] In 1997, Billiton Plc became a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.^[17]

Throughout the 1990s and beyond, Billiton Plc experienced considerable growth. Its portfolio included aluminium smelters in South Africa and Mozambique, nickel operations in Australia and Colombia, base metals mines in South America, Canada and South Africa, coal mines in Australia, Colombia and South Africa, as well as interests in operations in Brazil, Suriname, Australia (aluminium) and South Africa (titanium minerals and steel and ferroalloys).

In 2001 Billiton Plc merged with the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) to form BHP Billiton.^[4]

[edit]BHP Billiton Mergers and Acquisitions

In March 2005, BHP Billiton announced a US$7.3 billion agreed bid for another mining company, WMC Resources, owners of the Olympic Dam copper, gold and uranium mine in South Australia, nickel operations in Western Australia and Queensland, and a fertiliser plant also in Queensland. The takeover achieved 90% acceptance on 17 June 2005, and 100% ownership was announced on 2 August 2005, achieved through compulsory acquisition of the last 10% of the shares.^[20]

On 8 November 2007, BHP Billiton announced it was seeking to purchase rival mining group Rio Tinto Group in an all-share deal. The initial offer of 3.34 shares of BHP Billiton stock for each share of Rio Tinto was rejected by the board of Rio Tinto for "significantly undervaluing" the company. It was unknown at the time whether BHP Billiton would attempt to purchase Rio Tinto through some form of hostile takeover;^[21] however, CEO Marius Kloppers met with many of Rio's shareholders following the announcement and reiterated that the offer for Rio was "compelling" and that BHP Billiton is very "patient".^[22] A formal hostile bid of 3.4 BHP Billiton shares for each Rio Tinto share was announced on 6 February 2008.^[23] The bid was withdrawn on 25 November 2008 due to a global recession.^[24]

On 14 May 2008, BHP Billiton shares rose to a record high of AU $48.90 after speculation that Chinese mining firm Chinalco was considering purchasing a large stake. BHP representatives refused to comment.^[25]

On 25 November 2008, Billiton announced that it would drop its $66 billion takeover of rival Rio Tinto Group saying that the "risks to shareholder value" would "increase" to "an unacceptable level" due to the global financial crisis.^[26]

In January 2010, after BHP Billiton bought Athabasca Potash for $320m, The Economist reported that by 2020, BHP Billiton could produce approximately 15% of the world demand forpotash.^[27]

In August 2010, BHP Billiton made a hostile takeover bid worth $40 billion for the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. The bid came after BHP's first bid, made on 17 August, was rejected as being undervalued.^[28] This acquisition marked a major strategic move by BHP outside hard commodities and commenced the diversification of its business away from resources with high exposure to carbon price risk (coal, petroleum, iron ore). The takeover bid was opposed by the Government of Saskatchewan under Premier Brad Wall. On 3 November, Canadian Industry Minister Tony Clement announced the preliminary rejection of the deal under the Investment Canada Act, giving BHP Billiton 30 days to refine their deal before a final decision was made.^[29]

On 14 November 2010, the company announced that it was dropping its offer for Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan.^[30]

On 21 January 2009 the company announced that in response to the global financial crisis the BHP Billiton Ravensthorpe Nickel Project in Western Australia would cease operations, with a resultant discontinuation of shipments of ore from Ravensthorpe to the Yabulu nickel plant in Queensland Australia.^[31] Subsequently the Yabulu refinery was sold to Queensland billionaire Mr Clive Palmer. Additionally, the Pinto Valley mine in the United States was closed. In total, 6,000 employees were laid off, including those laid off with the scaling back at some other projects.^[32]

On 9 December 2009, BHP sold its Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine, which cost A$2.4 billion to build, to Vancouver-based First Quantum Minerals for US$340 million. First Quantum was one of three bidders for the mine and actually produced the lowest offer. The Canadian company plans to have the mine back in production in mid-2011. Ravensthorpe cost BHP US$3.6 billion in writedowns when it was shut in January 2009 after less than a year of production.^[33]

On 22 February 2011 BHP announced that it paying cash $4.75 billion to Chesapeake Energy Corp. for all of the company's Fayetteville shale assets which include 487,000 acres of mineral rights leases and 420 miles of pipeline located in north central Arkansas in the United States. The wells on the mineral leases are currently producing about 415 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. BHP plans to spend $800 million to $1 billion a year over 10 years to develop the field and triple production.^[34]

The Australian BHP Billiton Limited and the British BHP Billiton Plc are separately listed with separate shareholder bodies, but they operate as one business with identical boards of directors and a single management structure. The headquarters of BHP Billiton Limited, and the global headquarters of the combined BHP Billiton Group, are located in Melbourne, Australia, although ex-Premier of Victoria, Jeff Kennett, recently suggested this would change to the Australian mining capital of Perth, Western Australia upon completion of the 44 storey City Square tower currently under construction. BHP Billiton Plc is headquartered in London, United Kingdom.^[35] BHP Billiton also has corporate centres in Johannesburg, South Africa and Houston, USA, and offices in Perth, Santiago, Singapore, Shanghai and The Hague.

After the merger between BHP and Billiton in 2002, Brian Gilbertson of Billiton was appointed CEO. In 2003, after just six months at the helm, he abruptly stepped down, citing irreconcilable differences with the boards.^[37]

Upon Gilbertson's resignation, Chip Goodyear was announced as the new CEO. He continued in that role until his retirement on 30 September 2007.

Marius Kloppers was his successor.^[38]

Inclement weather caused a BHP Billiton helicopter to crash in Angola on 16 November 2007, killing the helicopter's five passengers. The dead were: BHP Billiton Angola Chief Operating Officer David Hopgood, Australian; Angola Technical Services Operations Manager Kevin Ayre, British; Wild Dog Helicopters pilot Kottie Breedt, South African; Guy Sommerfield of MMC, British; and Louwrens Prinsloo of Prinsloo Drilling, Namibian. The helicopter went down approximately 80 km / 50 miles from Alto Cuilo exploration facility in north eastern Angola. BHP Billiton responded by suspending operations in the country.^[39]

The United Nations Environment Programme has noted that BHP’s Ok Tedi mine site’s "uncontrolled discharge of 70 million tonnes of waste rock and mine tailings annually has spread more than 1 000 km (621 miles) down the Ok Tedi and Fly rivers, raising river beds and causing flooding, sediment deposition, forest damage, and a serious decline in the area's biodiversity."^[40] The resulting devastation caused by the mining of Ok Tedi has included the loss of fish, a vital food source for the local community; loss of forest and crops due to flooding and; the loss of "areas of deep spiritual value for villagers are now submerged in mine tailings."^[41]

In Western Australia, BHP's nickel operations are combined under the Nickel West Operation, which includes the Mount Keith Nickel Mine, the Leinster Nickel Mine, the Kambalda Nickel Concentrator, the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter and the Kwinana Nickel Refinery.^[42] Production figures published by the company at the end of 2008 are for the whole Nickel West Operations and not broken down to individual mines. In the calendar year 2008 Nickel West produced 85,800 tonnes of nickel. At the time, Nickel West also included the Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine.^[43]

Full specifications

The Argyle mine, located in the Kimberley region in the far north-east of Western Australia, is the world's largest single producer of diamonds. The mine lies some 550km south-west of Darwin by air. The region is remote, rugged and hot, with temperatures of over 40°C during the wet season from October to March. When production began in 1985, most of the workforce was Perth-based and operating on a two-week 'fly-in, fly-out' basis – requiring the construction of a complete camp infrastructure to support the operation. In recent years, however, a programme of localisation has been underway to base workers in East Kimberley. Argyle is operated by the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture, wholly owned by Rio Tinto since 2002. The initial mining lease expired in 2004 and has been renewed. In September 2010, Rio Tinto announced an investment of $803m to complete the project. The money will be used to ramp-up the underground block cave, which will extend the mine's life to 2019. The mine will be fully operational by 2013. Geology and reserves "In 2005, the mine processed 9.0Mt of lamproite ore to recover a total of 30.5Mct." The discovery of the Argyle orebody marked the first time that a commercial diamond occurrence had been identified that is not hosted in kimberlite. The AK1 pipe at Argyle instead consists of olivine lamproite, from which diamonds had been eroded to form placer (alluvial) deposits nearby. The deposit was discovered in 1979 by the Ashton joint venture, following some 12 years of exploration by various companies in the area. The discovery of alluvial diamonds led directly to their source, the AK1 pipe. At the end of 2009, the total measured, indicated and inferred resources in the AK1 pipe were 40Mt at a grade of 3.6ct/t. Proven and probable reserves (including open pit and underground) totalled 85Mt grading 2.1ct/t, and containing 178Mct. Mine development Development of Argyle was a two-stage process. Alluvial diamond mining took place between 1983 and 1985, when the AK1 pipe came into production. Since then, this has been the principal source of ore, supported by lesser amounts of alluvial material. Argyle operates as a conventional open-pit mine, with both lamproite and waste rock being drilled and blasted before being loaded out in a shovel-and-truck operation. The mine operates Bucyrus, P&H and Tamrock Driltech rotary drill rigs, O&K RH 200 hydraulic excavators and a fleet of Caterpillar 789B and Unit Rig MT4400 haul trucks, supported by Caterpillar wheel loaders, bulldozers and other ancillary equipment. The mine operation is monitored and vehicle movements are controlled using Modular Mining Systems' dispatch system, which uses a global positioning system (GPS) for accurate location of drills and other plant. Contract mining is used for the alluvial ores. Much of the waste rock is highly abrasive quartzite, and Argyle has been a long-term user of the Skega dump body system in its haul truck fleet. This uses a suspended, reinforced rubber liner in place of conventional steel plating in the hauler body. Ore processing Argyle's processing plant uses a crushing, screening, heavy-medium separation (HMS) and X-ray sorter diamond recovery flowsheet. 3mm ore forms the feed for the heavy-medium separation circuit while -1mm material is rejected to the plant tailings. Two-stage heavy medium cyclones with a specific gravity of 3.0 form the heart of the separation process, with material denser than the cut point forming the diamond-bearing concentrate. X-ray sorting separates the diamonds from residual waste in the HMS concentrate, the recovered stones being acid washed before sorting for shipment. Production Since coming into operation, Argyle has produced over 670Mct of diamonds, with an average stripping ratio in the open pit of around 7t of waste being moved for each tonne of ore mined. Peak production was in 1994, at 42.8Mct. The pit is now so deep that the lack of manoeuvrability in the bottom has come to hinder mining operations. In 2009 the mine produced 10.5Mct of diamonds. The mine also produces a large volume of the world's pink diamonds. The future The company is expected to reach to a point where the lamproite 'pipe' narrows and continues at greater depth, making continued access to the ore by open methods uneconomic. Back in 2001, the company began looking at the option of developing an underground mine – launching a pre-feasibility study to investigate all of the possible alternatives and transition strategies. The results of this led, in early 2003, to the approval of funding for a full feasibility study for a block cave underground mine and the construction of an exploratory decline. Both were completed during 2005 and in December of that year the decision was made to go ahead with the underground mine. "The mine also produces between 90% and 95% of the world's pink diamonds." Work on the A$1.6bn development began on schedule. In January 2009, however, Macmahon Holding, the primary mining contractor at Argyle Diamond mining site, announced that the underground diamond mining activities would be slowed due to the global economic downturn. Production capacity is predicted to average around 20Mct/y, compared with the current long-term average of 34Mct/y. In addition to the shift to underground working, the company is also in the process of localising most of its workforce in East Kimberley, aiming to have 80% based there by 2010 – and half of them Aboriginal. This forms part of major corporate step-change, described as 'reassessing Argyle's relationship to the area in which it mines'.
